President & Chief Executive Officer

Sunshine Communities

Organization Description:

About Sunshine Communities Our mission. Sunshine’s mission is to create community among people with developmental disabilities, their families, friends, and staff. We do this by offering services that enable all of us to build relationships that enhance our lives through mutual caring and growth. In pursuit of this mission, we practice Christian values in the tradition of the Mennonite faith, embrace the vision of our founders, Roy and Georgette Engler, and strengthen our community by serving the underserved. Our values. Empathy • Mutuality • Spirituality • Integrity • Stewardship Our story. In 1950, Roy and Georgette Engler opened Sunshine Children’s Home next to their own house. They wanted a brighter future for their five children, all of whom had developmental disabilities. Ten years later, they placed Sunshine in the care of the Mennonite Board of Missions and Charities. The promise they made has grown into a community that celebrated 75 years of service in 2024. What Makes Sunshine Special What makes Sunshine special is its drive to help each individual that they serve find a community of support and lead a rewarding life. Sunshine creates services that allow people with disabilities to be an integral part of the community. Support for every stage of life. Homes, supported living, day and job programs, nursing, therapy, behavior support, and transportation. Life in the community. Georgette’s Café and Sunshine Studios in Uptown Maumee, the Barn and Greenhouse, and deep ties with volunteers, schools, and churches. People who stay. Employees average more than eight years at Sunshine, and families name staff as its greatest strength.
